US Publishers Report Declining Revenues in 2022 Despite Increase in Print Book Sales

According to the most recent statistics from the Association of American Publishers' StatShot programme, US publishers' revenues decreased by 6.4% in 2022, according to Publishers Weekly.
Sales from the 1372 publications that submit data totalled US$12.6 billion (A$18.7 billion), a decrease from US$13.5 billion (A$20.1 billion) in 2021. All publishing categories had lower sales, including children's/YA book sales, which fell 5.7% and adult book sales, which fell 6.4%. Professional books plummeted 5.5%, higher education course materials fell 10.3%, and religious titles fell 6.1%.
The hardcover sales loss of 16.2% was a major contributor to the decline in the trade category. Sales of trade paperbacks climbed 3.7%. Sales of audiobooks increased digitally by 7.9%, while ebook sales decreased by 5.5%.
